It comes in a hank versus a center-pull skein, which means rolling the yarn into a ball is required prior to working with it. It's important to only do this once you're ready to work with the yarn, because storing yarn in a ball for long periods of time can stretch it out.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span>

The pure wool is quite bulky and a bit on the fuzzy side, but being Peruvian* wool it shouldn't pill and fuzz as quickly as Merino* wool. You do lose a share of the softness compared to Merino wool, so save this special yarn for adult items, but as long as your skin isn't too sensitive it's still fairly soft. You don't really want to use expensive yarn on clothing that will be outgrown in six months anyways.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18.4799995422363px;"><br /></span>

These wools are named after their sheep counter parts. The Merino sheep is bred for the softness of its wool, but it's also fragile and has a tendency to pill and fuzz quickly, not to mention stretch. The Peruvian sheep is a cross breed between Merino sheep and Corriedale sheep in order to combine the softness of the Merino wool with the durability of the Corriedale wool.</span><br />

There's only three days left! <a href="https://www.facebook.com/iloveyarnday/photos/a.762634567126970.1073741828.194582633932169/762634703793623/?type=1&theater" target="_blank">Like my photo</a> to help me win the I Love Yarn Day contest.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
---</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I posted my first ever video a few weeks ago, Crochet for Absolute Beginners. I went through the process of teaching someone who is brand new to crochet, how to pick a hook, hold their yarn, make a slip knot, then make chain stitches and single crochets, as well as two different styles of turning your work and a simple finish.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/8pQG7DWI7S4?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also went through the important process of practicing with a guinea pig, seeing where a new person had questions because I wasn't clear enough with my explanation - or maybe I didn't think to explain it at all because it comes naturally to me now. This guinea pig was my ever helpful boyfriend. I thanked him for his time and we went merrily on our ways. Okay, he went merrily on his way, I went to figure out how to edit video on a laptop with no screen that continually overheats.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few days later, I was scrolling through Pinterest, where I of course pinned the adorable Little Pumpkin amigurumi from my <a href="http://crochetbyconroy.blogspot.com/2014/10/crochet-round-up-halloween.html" target="_blank">Halloween round-up</a> post, when my boyfriend looks over.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">"Wait, you can make things in 3-D??"</span></blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We went to the store to pick up yarn and I gave him two of my extra hooks, and the rest is history.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to help him with the magic circles and figuring out how sc2tog work, but everything else he figured out from what I had taught using the same information from my beginner's tutorial above.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't know about you, but when I first picked up a crochet hook I couldn't even make an even square using single crochets. Have you ever taught someone who was just a natural? Tell me about it in the comments!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

The most exciting part of my week was being nominated to compete in the top ten of the #FiberFavorites contest on Facebook for I Love Yarn Day! <a href="https://www.facebook.com/iloveyarnday/photos/a.762634567126970.1073741828.194582633932169/762634703793623/?type=3&theater" target="_blank">Vote for my boot cuffs</a> by liking them to help me win.<br />

<br />
<br />
This week involved a lot of travel crochet. My traveling companion couldn't help but sleep on the five hour train ride home, so I did a little light reading and a lot of crocheting.<br />

<br />
<br />
Eek! I've been nominated!<br />
<br />
I've never even entered a contest before this one, and the lovely individuals over at I Love Yarn Day nominated <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/206152895/crochet-boot-cuff-made-to-order-with?ref=shop_home_active_1" target="_blank">my boot cuffs</a> as one of the top ten projects submitted in this contest. It's up to everyone else to like the photos to vote for the winner.<br />
<br />
It would mean the world to me if you <a href="https://www.facebook.com/iloveyarnday/photos/a.762634567126970.1073741828.194582633932169/762634703793623/?type=3&theater" target="_blank">vote for my cute little boot cuffs</a>!<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The top ten nominations already win a membership to <a href="http://www.creativebug.com/" target="_blank">Creativebug</a>, a site in the same vein as Craftsy, and a copy of <i>Crochet with One Sheepish Girl</i>. Okay, I am head over heels because I LOVE One Sheepish Girl. She's probably the biggest reason I decided I wanted to make a crochet blog, because I loved the way her photos brought everything to life.</div>
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
I digress.<br />
<br />
The photo with the most likes also wins the grand prize: A Lion Brand bag filled with twenty (20!) balls of yarn. My fellow yarn lovers, you understand why I need your help winning this contest. Please, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/iloveyarnday/photos/a.762634567126970.1073741828.194582633932169/762634703793623/?type=3&theater" target="_blank">vote for my boot cuffs</a> - think of the glorious yarn!<br />
<br />
I can only imagine how much fun I would have crafting new items for my shop and to share yarn reviews on my blog. Thank you guys so much for your support. I'll leave a button at the top of my sidebar so you can continue to find the link to my contest photo until the contest ends, which is on Friday, October 24th.<br />
<br />
Xoxo,<br />

First Order to Celebrate I Love Yarn DayHappy I Love Yarn Day! I think most of us love yarn every day, but it's so fun to see everyone celebrating yarn at the same time. I was really itching to buy new yarn today but I was good and held off. Once I get paid for my first order, I'm going to go find some pretty burgundy. Maybe I'll go exploring in Toronto while I'm on vacation.<br />
<br />
Speaking of vacation, my Etsy shop is on hold so I'm not accepting any more orders until next Thursday since I won't be able to mail anything out until the next week.<br />

I am SO excited. It's been years since I've had real TV channels and it's only in my adult life that I've grown to appreciate television series. The Walking Dead is one of my all-time favorites thus far, so here is my crochet round up of some of my favorite Walking Dead inspired items!<br />

There are lots and lots of Amigurumi versions of The Walking Dead characters on Etsy. These are just a few of my favorites. I'd talk about favorite characters but pretty much everyone other than The Governor is good in my books. Seriously, I need to try my hand at Amigurumi, I've already got quite a few tiny hooks laying around.</div>

Each square represents a stitch, so your final product could be a giant afghan or even a scarf if you use the right yarn and hook, and then change the edges to suit your needs. You can see with the Daryl graph pictured above, it would be very easy to extend the white space into a rectangle for a scarf if you were working with a lighter weight yarn.</div>

These yarn colors are all inspired by characters from The Walking Dead. Just follow the link to read the creator's vision in how they link to each character - it's very impressive! I'm also partial to them as they are hand dyed in my home state, Minnesota. The colorway comes in two weights: 3-ply fingering and 4-ply worsted, and both merino and wool blends.</div>

I still haven't invested in any stitch markers yet, but these are really cool. My two requirements for my future stitch markers is that they be super awesome and/or cute looking, and that they use a crab claw clasp. Then again, I could probably just get the clasps separate and attach them myself.</div>

This is the first item I started this week and the first thing I finished. It's a modified version of a pattern from the Craftsy class <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/lecture/foundation-and-post-stitches/7446.html?useConviva=true&t=710&moneySymbol=C%24&NAVIGATION_PAGE_CONTEXT_ATTR=CLASS" target="_blank">Amazing Crochet Textures</a>. The goal is to make a small afghan out of squares by the end of this free mini-course, but I decided I wanted to break up the "squares" and turn them into something I could put in my Etsy shop. I'll do a more in-depth review of this in a post about the entire Craftsy course.<br />

<h4 style="text-align: center;">
Bailey Boot Cuffs</h4>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is another free pattern which I got from <a href="http://crochetdreamz.blogspot.ca/2014/09/bailey-boot-cuffs-free-crochet-pattern.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+CrochetDreamz+(Crochet+Dreamz+)#.VDHxnfldWSp" target="_blank">Crochet Dreamz</a>, but lacking in cute statement buttons I decided to forgo the button and decorative strap altogether.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
They are super cute and I am looking forward to making these in multiple colors! I loved them so much I decided I'll be posting this item as "made to order" instead of made to ship, because I'm keeping the original pair.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M6QQq7IVCAY/VDIds_ONfaI/AAAAAAAAAYM/6lE-sggmedw/s1600/cuffs3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-M6QQq7IVCAY/VDIds_ONfaI/AAAAAAAAAYM/6lE-sggmedw/s1600/cuffs3.JPG" height="320" width="289" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The only down side is that I have a tendency to walk with my calves rubbing together, which stresses the wool yarn. I may have to switch to acrylic yarn, but then they will be machine washable and more user-friendly anyhow.<br />
<br />

Coffee Cozies</h4>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These two coffee cozies are just a simple pattern I whipped up in the moment.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T_pBkSyubyg/VDIYzDArKAI/AAAAAAAAAXk/x-spYLox7R0/s1600/IMG_0518.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T_pBkSyubyg/VDIYzDArKAI/AAAAAAAAAXk/x-spYLox7R0/s1600/IMG_0518.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-71JuVWQsXAk/VDIYzUE5EKI/AAAAAAAAAXo/48_7xqXf1mA/s1600/IMG_0519.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-71JuVWQsXAk/VDIYzUE5EKI/AAAAAAAAAXo/48_7xqXf1mA/s1600/IMG_0519.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I made a chain based on the height I wanted the cozy to be, did a row of single crochets, and then repeatedly did rows of single crochets in back loops only until it was tall enough to wrap around a commercial coffee cup. I slip stitched the short sides together and did a round of single crochet on the top and bottom to prevent it from stretching too much.<br />

Halloween is less than four weeks away, so if you haven't started crocheting your Halloween items, it's time to get on it! Here are a few of my favorite crochet goodies I've seen lately for the holiday. </div>

I originally saw this yarn made into a pair of knitted socks. The vibrancy of the colors and the name caught me off guard. Who doesn't love a couple How I Met Your Mother references? But seriously, the series finale. I digress, but leave your thoughts below if you've seen it, I still have mixed emotions.<br /><h4 style="text-align: center;">

Plus 3 Crochet is making the cutest Halloween banners this year to help save up for a surgery. Knowing your money is going to a good cause is a great excuse to treat yourself to something this adorable. Hang it up for the kiddo's party during the day and then darken the place up with some creepy cobwebs and spiders.<br />

What Halloween would be complete without your friendly neighborhood ghost? This ghost is inspired by Casper, made classy with a red bow tie. As a kid I loved the 1995 movie Casper with Christina Ricci and was determined I would one day be nicknamed Kat. The nickname never quite stuck but I never lost my love for the movie or the ghost.<br />

<br />
I am a huge fan of Halloween, always have been. I already picked out my costume for the year and I'm planning a pumpkin-carving party as soon as I return from my Canadian Thanksgiving vacation. Whether you love to be frightened and startled, or would rather chew off a leg before watching a horror movie, Halloween is just one of those seasons that has something for everyone.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07394031322217476712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864365780266233204.post-72058088645902477492014-10-02T05:30:00.000-04:002014-10-02T13:27:15.888-04:00Stay Connected on Facebook and TwitterLove crocheting but hate having to remember to check yet another site? Mischievous Mittens</h4>

<br />
<br />
This week I was dead set on finishing a pair of mittens with James Brett's Marble DK, one of my <a href="http://crochetbyconroy.blogspot.ca/2014/09/yarn-review-james-c-brett-marble-dk.html" target="_blank">favorite yarns</a> to date. I planned on using these mittens to create an Etsy listing for made-to-order* mittens of varying sizes which would be ready to ship within a week of purchase. This pattern took a little trial and error because the <a href="http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-mittens.html" target="_blank">pattern by Lionbrand</a> calls for a bulky, 12 ply yarn and my Marble double knit yarn is only 8 ply. According to Ravelry's yarn database, that's a size difference of about 64%**.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c5kaLzBSBuo/VCj5s8NnbeI/AAAAAAAAAVk/wmnenC3zG7w/s1600/IMG_0439.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c5kaLzBSBuo/VCj5s8NnbeI/AAAAAAAAAVk/wmnenC3zG7w/s1600/IMG_0439.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I started my mittens using a mix of the two largest pattern sizes (adult medium and large) and, as you might imagine, I ended up with a beautiful but child-sized mitten. The second mitten of the pair will be finished this week now that I've settled on how to use the pattern and yarn combined, and shortly there-after will be listed on my Etsy shop. These are the most challenging items I've made to date, but they are so beautiful and so worth it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KzRJuCY9O50/VCj507iR6aI/AAAAAAAAAVs/p2oz9DtSKYw/s1600/IMG_0444.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KzRJuCY9O50/VCj507iR6aI/AAAAAAAAAVs/p2oz9DtSKYw/s1600/IMG_0444.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Iun90WA3NWU/VCj501TqRwI/AAAAAAAAAVw/ICAEpQ5sWbI/s1600/IMG_0448.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Iun90WA3NWU/VCj501TqRwI/AAAAAAAAAVw/ICAEpQ5sWbI/s1600/IMG_0448.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I don't think I can time-efficiently edit the pattern to make the mittens actual adult sizes with this 8 ply yarn, so I will list these particular mittens as ready-to-ship instead of made-to-order. My made-to-order mittens will have to wait until I pick up some bulkier yarn.<br />
<br />
<b>A (W)holey Useful Stitch</b><br />
<br />
The pattern also made use of the single crochet two together (sc2tog) stitch which was extremely easy to pick up; it just required a quick Google. While beginner patterns may not require much shaping, the stitch is simple enough for any beginner who can create a slip knot, chain (ch) stitch, single crochet (sc), and finish off their own work.<br />
<br />
This is a stitch used for shaping, specifically to decrease the size of your row to make the item smaller. A problem I encountered from using this stitch was that it left large holes in comparison to any of the foundation stitches. I remedied this as much as possible by weaving in the tails at these locations (wrist, tip of thumb, tip of mitten) instead of using them to sew up the side like the pattern instructed.<br />

<br />
<br />
This is some of the prettiest yarn with which to work. It's double knit, so one strand of the yarn is completely white, but the other strand varies from white to dark grey, giving a beautiful gradient to anything you work up. Certain projects can feel tedious at times (Single crochet blankets, anyone?) but watching the yarn change from light to dark and back again helps point out all of the progress being made. As a goal-oriented individual, I will definitely be looking for similar yarn the next time I think about starting a large, simple project like an afghan.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d4YdBkj27QU/VCWPujHyanI/AAAAAAAAAVE/0IXtoHacWpM/s1600/IMG_0430.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d4YdBkj27QU/VCWPujHyanI/AAAAAAAAAVE/0IXtoHacWpM/s1600/IMG_0430.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The arguably second-best attribute of this yarn is the fact it is, wait for it, machine washable! I'm just as guilty as anyone of getting a little lazy from time to time with my "hand wash" articles, even the finer ones, but I always feel guilty knowing I'm ruining the material much faster than I should be. Whatever is made with this yarn, however, should be able to handle the stress of a normal washing machine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1bXHD6HkWhc/VCWP4tqDYFI/AAAAAAAAAVM/rz77JotWiQ8/s1600/IMG_0431.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1bXHD6HkWhc/VCWP4tqDYFI/AAAAAAAAAVM/rz77JotWiQ8/s1600/IMG_0431.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The only thing dislikable about this yarn is the fact that double knit yarn is a little harder to work up. Being a very proficient crocheter means this poses little problem for me, but I would not recommend any beginners using a double knit yarn unless they are willing to take excellent care with their stitches. Making a single mistake with the double knit yarn while one strand is bright white and the other is dark grey means a single glance will show off the mistake because the white strand isn't following the same pattern.<br />

I purchased this yarn at a local yarn store in Ottawa.<br />
<br />
For <b>North Americans</b>, find out where James Brett yarns are stocked by using <a href="http://storelocator.westminsterfibers.com/brandstateselect.aspx" target="_blank">this store locator</a> and choosing "Handknitting - James Brett" in the first drop down menu, followed by selecting your state or province in the second drop down menu.<br />
<br />
For anyone living in the <b>UK</b>, you can <a href="http://www.jamescbrett.co.uk/stockist_info.php" target="_blank">contact James C Brett yarns directly</a> and inquire about your local stores.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07394031322217476712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864365780266233204.post-35455941129894673082014-09-24T10:00:00.000-04:002014-10-06T00:52:56.979-04:00Ballet Crochet Round Up<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last week I attended my first official ballet lesson and tonight will be my second. As a little girl, my best friend used to teach me little details from her ballet lessons, and I've always loved the elegance of this particular style of dance. So in honor of all of the inspirational ballerinas and the eight year old best friends, the crochet round up for this week is ballet themed.</div>

I've finished my list for the year. I decided to go a little smaller and achievable than last year, really forcing myself to only pick the best designs to work with. The official A Year of Projects runs from July 1st 2014 to June 30th 2015, so I have nine months to complete these projects and learn the new techniques I've listed. Of course, once I master the techniques, tutorials will be posted on Youtube so all of you can join me.<br />
<br />
All of my posts throughout the year will once again be featuring the cute little banner pictured above that I created for <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/groups/a-year-of-projects" target="_blank">the Ravelry group</a> last year.<br />

I've been blogging and tweeting and learning and crocheting like crazy for a year and a half, but today is a special day because I finally took the plunge and spent twenty cents to list an item for sale online.<br /><br />Yes, a big investment, I know. There's a lot more coming, but today I'd like to set aside time to mark that I achieved a dream I've had for years.<br /><br />Feel free to take a peek at my Etsy shop and first listing at www.etsy.com/shop/crochetbyconroy. Connect with me across the web; I'm on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.<br /><br /><br />Much love,<br />KateAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07394031322217476712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864365780266233204.post-9131831063611764932014-09-21T11:50:00.000-04:002014-09-21T11:51:08.665-04:00Welcoming Autumn and New CrochetersHello, hello, hello!<br />
<br />
Autumn is just days away, and all you yarnies know that means it's time to get those Christmas presents underway and maybe make yourself a new scarf or pair of mittens in between projects. Never crocheted? No problem! I'll be posting new crochet tutorials on Youtube every week, starting with the very basics and moving through various stitches and techniques, as well as giving recommendations for patterns to try as you master these skills. Looking for something specific? Leave a comment on this post or on any of my videos.<br />
<br />
See you over at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkyxVFd3Cgo8HzKyLQweuQA" target="_blank">Youtube</a> tomorrow morning.<br />
Xoxo,<br />

Where has the week gone? I wish I could blame my lack of posts on flying home and spending time with family and friends, but I know what the real culprit is. It's The Scarf of Procrastination. Do you remember me telling you about that tangled ball of horrible?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tC3HrzleaKo/UeF8Z1iNpdI/AAAAAAAAAQo/8H6qcQjw9Rw/s1600/20130713_120750.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tC3HrzleaKo/UeF8Z1iNpdI/AAAAAAAAAQo/8H6qcQjw9Rw/s320/20130713_120750.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Admittedly, after spending several hours untangling followed by my parents spending an hour untangling followed by hiding my yarn from the household smokers, I was kind of feeling a buzz kill for crochet. Although the pattern I'm using for this scarf isn't helping matters either. I've never been a big fan of making finer scarfs simply because they take so much repetition for so long in order to see real progress, but this one is worse.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-prPlpZWzgO8/UfDOs50nhWI/AAAAAAAAAR0/mVF9QIh5RgM/s1600/20130725_020642.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-prPlpZWzgO8/UfDOs50nhWI/AAAAAAAAAR0/mVF9QIh5RgM/s320/20130725_020642.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I like this view, it looks like I have more done than I really do.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
In order to make what I believe is a type of cluster stitch (4 dc into same stitch), I have to stop, take the hook out of the yarn, reinsert it a few stitches back, then grab the dropped loop again before I can continue. This slows the process down by approximately one million years. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but I've really been struggling to enjoy this project. So I've decided I'm going to finish it this week so I can have it over with and start something fun, like a cowl or some fingerless gloves. Here is my progress for now, but I promise I can feel my <strike><span style="font-size: x-small;">addiction</span></strike> love for crochet coming back to <strike><span style="font-size: x-small;">swallow</span></strike> embrace me! I just have to keep thinking of all the fun things I get to make after this scarf, and how proud I will be when I see it listed on my Etsy shop for the very first time.<br />
<br />

I started by just trying to change my navigation to include drop down menus and ended up with a whole new theme. Oops. The best part is I still don't have drop down menus, but I really am loving this new theme so it makes up for it. I like the crisp, clean look. As much as I love darker colors, I like to keep my crocheting light-hearted; I never crochet upset.<br />
<br />
Anyways, I just wanted to let you guys know content is going back to your regularly scheduled programming. Ta ta for now, I promise to have more crochet goodies up this weekend -- and one of them may be a finished project!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07394031322217476712noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864365780266233204.post-25700893766619441902013-07-15T14:17:00.001-04:002013-07-15T17:49:29.076-04:00Blog Under Construction<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I made a small swatch of the Tunisian Simple Stitch before trying to make a basket, but all of the edges were curling so I clearly have some more practice to do before I can cross the Tunisian Simple Stitch off my list. I ended up tossing the basket.<br />

<br />
Yay! This basket turned out quite well and is my first finish for the year. It was my first time crocheting with multiple strands together and it was a little tricky, but I think it was just because my hook was a little on the small side. The handles aren't perfectly symmetrical either but that's probably because I was having a glass of wine.<br />

Yesterday I flew home to visit family for a month and a half while I'm on summer break, which is why there was no Round Up this week. </div>
<div dir="ltr">

<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I brought a new project with me on the plane (and plenty more in my luggage). The pattern is Patons Lace Delicate Scarf and I'm using Sirdar Snuggly 3 ply in a baby blue and white.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The yarn was not only tangled up, but the individual threads got stuck together too, almost like the yarn got threaded through itself.</div>

<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0U76ZU1Balw/UeGE9Wbue8I/AAAAAAAAAQ0/uis51ktYDzM/s1600/20130713_124258.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0U76ZU1Balw/UeGE9Wbue8I/AAAAAAAAAQ0/uis51ktYDzM/s400/20130713_124258.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>

<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Even after hours (yes, hours plural) of untangling, then more untangling by my angelic mother and step father, my yarn was pilling from being in a knot and it hadn't even been made into anything yet.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>

<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
This isn't cheap yarn so I'm a little disappointed. Once it was finally untangled, I wound it up into a ball to make sure I didn't have the same problem again. I decided I wanted to unravel the couple rows I had done and restart it, now that I had a better feel for the pattern, to make my stitches more even. But guess what? I couldn't, because the yarn snagged on itself.</div>

<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
Since I don't need all of the blue, I think I'll just cut it off and start over, but this yarn is horrible to work with! I have never been so disappointed with yarn, but I guess that's the trouble with working with a yarn this soft. </div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br /></div>
<div dir="ltr">
I'm curious if it's all super-soft yarn that acts like this, or if it's just this Sirdar yarn I bought. Please share your thoughts!</div>

</div>
This was my very first time working with Tunisian crochet. I followed a very <a href="http://crochetingthedayaway.blogspot.ca/2011/10/tunisian-crochet-how-to-basic-tunisian.html">wonderful tutorial</a> by Crochet the Day Away.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Un7g5XGIVSk/UdsDWL4tGzI/AAAAAAAAAO0/zV87pv--QAo/s1600/20130703_104743.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Un7g5XGIVSk/UdsDWL4tGzI/AAAAAAAAAO0/zV87pv--QAo/s320/20130703_104743.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tunisian Basic Stitch Swatch</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I started with making a small swatch to get a feel for the basic stitch before I made any real projects. I loved the pattern (both right and wrong sides) and the stiffness in the created fabric, but even with crocheting in a fashion that would normally be quite loose, my stitches felt very tight.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tunisian Basic Stitch Swatch</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
As you can see in this picture, the fabric was curling a lot. This was after I tried to tame it with a little tugging and flattering camera angles. I also think I skipped a stitch at the beginning. Oops. I figured it was time to try making something with this stitch, and since the pattern reminds me of baskets, I figured it's a perfect stitch to make a little basket for the powder room to hold extra rolls of toilet paper.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I am admittedly quite embarrassed to show this, erm, piece of work. It didn't turn out at all how I wanted. This was my first ever basket and I just improvised a pattern instead of following one. Despite the stiffness of the Tunisian basic stitch compared to normal crochet stitches, it was still quite flimsy and I had major curl-age on the sides! I didn't even bother weaving in the ends because I know this piece is probably just going to get tossed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pSCJx3KbMKQ/UdsTeCPJLnI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/R6idqJP4EAk/s1600/20130708_144423.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pSCJx3KbMKQ/UdsTeCPJLnI/AAAAAAAAAPQ/R6idqJP4EAk/s320/20130708_144423.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I wasn't paying close enough attention at the end and accidentally made my contrast side panels go in two different directions since one was attached directly onto the side and the other was attached onto the base. I'm also not a big fan of the yarn colors. I'm not really a camo girl, and while the only then-current colors in the powder room were white and black (I know, how brave), this just did not look nice. Since then we bought a gorgeous, deep red hand towel so if it wasn't out before, it is now!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong to make the pieces curl up, but I think I will have to revisit this project later once I get yarn that looks nice with the new hand towel. Next time I'm going to try using a bigger, non-Tunisian hook to get a looser tension. I think I'll go back to flat things like dish towels for mastering the basic Tunisian stitch and then make my powder room basket with a multiple-strands-together technique.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/crochetbyconroy/ombre-basket" target="_blank">Ravelry Project</a></td></tr>

I made this basket following the <a href="http://crochetincolor.blogspot.ca/2012/03/ombre-basket-pattern.html" target="_blank">Ombre Basket</a> pattern from Crochet in Color. The base of the basket was made of half double crochets and the body was all single crochets, making this basket a very simple pattern. Ideal for beginners who have mastered squares and the basic stitches because you get to practice working in the round, and the only "weird" step is switching from the base to the body when you crochet into the side of the hdcs instead of the normal loops. The picture tutorial explains this step very clearly, however, so it's still something anyone could figure out. Using more than one strand at a time was new for me, but after a couple rounds I was up to speed. I think the biggest hook I own (6.5mm / K) was still a little too small as I kept losing one strand and having to pick it back up again.<br />
<br />
The only trouble that could have been attributed to the pattern is that the handles weren't perfectly symmetrical in placement, but I can't say that it's the pattern's fault because I was enjoying a glass of wine while finishing this up! It's not noticeable unless you're looking for it, so I'm not going to waste yarn to fix it.<br />
<br />
I can't be the only one, so tell me about a project you messed up while relaxing!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07394031322217476712noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6864365780266233204.post-46515900460909817382013-07-07T06:00:00.000-04:002013-07-07T12:57:24.636-04:00A Year of Projects Update 1: The List<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've finished my list for the year! After hearing everyone else talk about pigeon-holing themselves into specific patterns, I was a little worried since many of the items on my list are, indeed, specific patterns. This said, I've decided I'm going to leave it as-is but note that my list is going to be flexible! I will guilt-freely change patterns while keeping the object type the same, and I will likely add on (or maybe even remove) items as I go. This is going to be a comprehensive list of everything I crochet for the year.<br />
<br />
If my list looks a little lengthy, that's because I have an Etsy shop to open! I'm planning on finishing several of these before September so I can open shop while all the fall/winter clothing shopping is happening. I should also note that items that are already started will have an asterisk (*) next to it.<br />
